Capturing an enemy country calls for strategic mastery and the effective use of resources. To occupy the maximum amount of territory quickly requires many small armies fighting a skirmish or guerilla type war, while cautiously avoiding the main concentration of the enemy’s forces, until they can be drawn to a battle of your own choosing. However, if any small army is engaged by the enemy then a Mathematical Battle will be fought. In Austerlitz all small army battles are handled mathematically by the computer, taking into account the troop types, their capabilities in long range fire and hand to hand combat and also their experience. In mathematical battles a detailed printout of the outcome of each round of the battle; artillery, musket and rifle fire and of course close combat; is produced. The losses on each side are calculated and one army is declared the victor or the battle may end undecided.
